Women Build Revival: Empowering Women, Strengthening Communities

.

For the first time in over a decade, Women Build returned to Pickens County Habitat for Humanity (PCHFH), uniting 48 passionate volunteers to learn, build, and empower one another. The event, held on March 8th—International Women’s Day—during Women in Construction Week and Women’s History Month, was more than just a celebration. It was a revival of opportunity.

More Than a Build—A Space to Learn and Grow

Women Build is about more than raising walls—it’s about building confidence and breaking barriers. For many volunteers, it was their first time handling power tools, measuring lumber, and learning the fundamentals of construction. With support from experienced builders and teammates, each participant walked away with new skills and a real sense of accomplishment.

"One of our Women Build participants had never even used a hammer before,” shared Tamara Dourney, Executive Director of PCHFH. “By the end of the day, she’d helped build and raise a wall. That’s what this event is about—giving women a space to learn, grow, and make a lasting difference."

With more than 1.3 million women now working in construction, opportunities in the field continue to grow., opportunities in the field are expanding. But for many, the first step is simply gaining the confidence to pick up a tool and start learning. That’s exactly what Women Build provides—a welcoming space for hands-on education, collaboration, and support.

Building Community, One Wall at a Time

The event brought together enthusiastic volunteers from Arthrex, Clemson’s Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, and members of the Clemson Campus Chapter, all working side by side with future Habitat homeowners. For two of the homeowner partners in attendance, this build was especially meaningful, as they put in sweat equity hours toward the very home they will one day own.

Among the many memorable moments was a real-life problem-solving challenge that showcased the power of teamwork.

"It was an amazing experience," said Women Build participant Gwendolyn Gbadamosi. "It truly felt like I was making a difference in the community, and I loved seeing everyone come together with such enthusiasm and willingness to help. One moment that stood out was when we realized the wall was positioned too far to the right; we quickly troubleshot the issue and worked as a team to fix it. The teamwork and positive energy made it such a rewarding experience, and I’m grateful to have been a part of it!"

A Revival Worth Celebrating

Women Build last took place in Pickens County in 2010, making this year’s event a long-awaited return. Dourney reflected on its significance:

"Women Build is one of my favorite events because it brings women together to not only help construct a home but to also build confidence and lasting friendships. It was just as heartening to see the men who showed up in support, working right beside them to create a home for a family in need."

With Women Build officially back, PCHFH is committed to continuing to create opportunities for women to learn vital skills, empowering them to step into construction roles and leadership positions in their communities.
