Are you a high school student looking to make a difference in your community in a fun yet challenging way? The Pickens County Habitat for Humanity HOME Challenge, sponsored by State Farm, invites you to work on ideas to improve housing affordability, accessibility, and sustainability right here in your local community.
The goal is to compose a video presentation with a focus on one or more key areas with a focus on one or more of the following key areas 1) conceptualizing new building technologies that are eco-friendly and affordable; 2) designing community planning strategies that prioritize sustainability and inclusiveness; 3) dreaming up creative fundraising campaigns to raise money for housing projects; and/or 4) proposing policy advocacy efforts to ultimately improve housing options in Pickens County.
Don’t worry — you don’t have to jump in alone! Feel free to gather your friends and form a team of up to five members. Even if you decide to participate individually, Habitat staff members and volunteers will be available to offer feedback and suggestions to ultimately help guide you every step of the way. So get excited — this is your opportunity to make an impact that matters in shaping your creative ideas into tangible solutions.
To celebrate your contributions to the challenge, awards will be given in both individual and team categories. If competing in a team, you’ll have the chance to win up to $400 dollars while the individual winner will take home $300. There are also second and third place prizes as well, so everyone can have a fair chance to receive some well-deserved recognition.
Mark your calendars for the Kick Off Event on March 14 where you will learn about local affordable housing challenges, review expectations, and meet your mentors to brainstorm. Registration will close on March 21 to ensure you have time to turn in your final submission on April 30. The final presentation showcasing winning projects and awards ceremony will take place on May 30. We can’t wait to honor your remarkable efforts to the cause.
