Ink drawing of a house

Pickens Habitat brings people together to build community! Since 1981, we've helped neighbors achieve the safety and security that can be found in affordable homeownership. We couldn't do this without the help of our local community and caring partners.

Read on to learn more about the impact we've made through the years with the help of generous donors and dedicated volunteers.

An Open Letter from Incoming Executive Director Tamara Dourney

As I begin my tenure as Executive Director at Pickens County Habitat for Humanity (PCHFH), the weight of this role is matched only by my eagerness to contribute to our shared goals. Jill's dedication over the past 18 years has been the cornerstone of our success, creating a legacy of community and compassion. Her impact is a constant source of inspiration as we move forward and provides a solid foundation to build upon.

My journey with Habitat for Humanity, from my time at Chipola Area Habitat to my role here, has been defined by a commitment to addressing housing insecurity and leveraging my background in sociology and nonprofit management to foster meaningful change. My experiences, particularly in volunteer coordination and communications, have underscored the importance of building strong partnerships to achieve our mission.

The cornerstone of my leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in the power of collaboration. By uniting our efforts, we're not just overcoming challenges; we're making significant strides toward providing affordable housing. It's important to me that we embrace the fun aspects of our work—like the undeniable community-building power of feeding volunteers and handing out stickers. These simple acts bring us together, fostering a sense of belonging and teamwork.

But make no mistake, while I embrace the lighter side of our mission, I remain deeply committed to tackling the serious issues at hand. We're not just building houses; we're addressing inequity and creating opportunities for our community to thrive. Through actions that support the local workforce and enable families to build wealth, we are impacting generations. This blend of joy in our daily tasks with a serious commitment to our cause is what I believe will lead us toward even greater achievements.

I’m grateful for the chance to lead PCHFH into a future where we continue to build on the strong foundation laid by Jill and all who have contributed, and I’m excited about what lies ahead. Together, we'll not only construct homes but also weave a stronger community fabric. Thank you for your support and belief in our work.
