Pickens County Habitat for Humanity is honored to collaborate with the Clemson University chapter on the 31st annual Homecoming Build, a tradition that gives students and Clemson community members the opportunity to take part in our mission of providing affordable housing for all. This year’s build kicked off unusually early, beginning on September 17th. The accelerated start created unique challenges for the Campus Chapter leadership, who shouldered the responsibilities of fundraising, securing product donations such as lumber, and managing on-site construction logistics.
The early start wasn't the only hurdle. Shortly after breaking ground, a weather front delayed construction. Despite these setbacks, the team remained focused and determined, demonstrating the true spirit of the Clemson Family. Senior Construction Science Management major and 2024 Homecoming Build Coordinator, Charlie Rohaley, shared what this build means to him:
"One reason why this build on Bowman Field is so special to me is because, when I was a freshman coming to Clemson, everyone from Professors to University Staff told me something about the Clemson Family. It wasn't until that first Homecoming Build, coming out here with my friends, peers, and fellow students, when I got to see people from all different majors swing a hammer and maybe hit their thumb and cry a little bit, but build a house for the community. This house is Clemson coming together. This is the Clemson Family. I'm sitting in it now."
Rohaley’s words capture the essence of this annual project—a symbol of unity and service.
On September 23rd, a key milestone was reached when the walls of the house went up, signaling real progress toward making a family’s dream of homeownership a reality. However, the team faced another challenge when Tropical Storm Helene forced the build to close early on September 25th. Still, despite the disruptions, volunteers made impressive headway under both rain and shine, a testament to their dedication and hard work.
Reflecting on the build’s significance, Pickens County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director, Tamara Dourney, praised the commitment of the Clemson students:
"If you ever want to renew your hope for the future, visit the Homecoming Build when it's in full swing. The students and staff of Clemson University carry a dedication to service that has the power to transform the world. The student leadership of the Campus Chapter should be so proud of their achievements. They've stepped out of their comfort zones, experienced a few failures, celebrated many successes, and persevered through the hardships presented by weather to create an impact beyond measure—another family finding safety and security through homeownership in a home with payments they can afford."
Undeterred by the looming threat of Tropical Storm Helene, the Homecoming Build celebration dinner proceeded as planned, offering a night of reflection, fun, and fellowship. Guests enjoyed a delicious BBQ spread, while the Clemson Tiger mascot made a special appearance, adding school pride and excitement. The evening also featured a silent auction, on-site raffle, and a lively mocktail challenge, raising over $2,000 to support the build.

Through the weather challenges, the dedication and enthusiasm of the Clemson Campus Chapter shone brightly, reinforcing the strong sense of community that fuels the success of the Homecoming Build year after year. 
Looking ahead, Pickens County Habitat for Humanity remains deeply committed to the Homecoming Build and the effort of the Clemson community to provide safe, affordable housing for deserving families. The Homecoming Build is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together in service and compassion.
