Every year during Homecoming week, as people walk past Bowman Field, they are often captivated by the colorful floats and lively sorority and fraternity tents. However, many overlook another crucial part of this week: a nonprofit organization and student chapter that’s quietly making a significant impact on the community. That organization is Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit dedicated to building homes for families in need and providing affordable housing to those who would otherwise go without.
One key figure behind Habitat for Humanity's efforts is Kevin Parris. During this year’s Homecoming week, he shared insights about his role and the contributions he brings to our community.
When asked what inspired him to work for Habitat for Humanity, Parris revealed a deeply personal connection.
"My wife was the recipient of the 2009 Homecoming Build," he said. "We met in 2013, and to this day, our Habitat home is flanked by two other Habitat homes."
His experience of living in a Habitat-built home gives him unique insight, deepening his understanding of the organization’s impact and fueling his passion for its mission in a truly meaningful way.
This year’s Homecoming Build began on Sunday, September 17, when Habitat staff, Campus Chapter leaders, and volunteers gathered on Bowman Field to start construction of a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home destined for Habersham Lane in Easley, South Carolina. What started as a typical build quickly changed, though, as the weather severely affected progress.
"We had two rainy days on the first two days," Kevin explained. "Then, when we were ready to put the roof on, the incoming storm caused the build to shut down."
The weather, as Kevin shared, is always unpredictable and difficult to control. "It’s only a problem if you can’t fix it," he added optimistically, emphasizing that while setbacks happen, the team’s focus always remains on finding solutions and moving forward. His positive outlook reflects the resilience and determination that define the Homecoming Build each year, as volunteers work together to ensure that progress continues, rain or shine.
Despite these challenges, Kevin emphasized how crucial the Clemson Chapter of Habitat for Humanity was in keeping the build on track. The unpredictable weather and delays made their role even more vital.
"I can’t do my job without the Clemson Chapter. One hundred percent of the credit goes to those guys. No matter what I ask of them, they always show up," he said, expressing deep gratitude for their unwavering dedication and support. Their leadership and commitment were essential in overcoming obstacles and pushing the project forward.
The students and volunteers have been crucial to the progress of the build, reinforcing that Habitat’s success is a team effort. Even when the weather interrupts, the dedication of these volunteers helps keep things on track.
Beyond his work with Habitat, Parris also has an impressive background in property management. He has managed 800 student homes and properties with Tiger Properties, which gives him a wealth of experience in construction and housing. This experience allows him to approach Habitat’s projects with a unique perspective, further enhancing his ability to lead builds and deliver quality homes for families in need.
In our conversation, Kevin reflected on the relationships he’s built with volunteers and the revolving door of new faces at every build.
"God gave me the gift of gab," he laughed. "I can read a situation and jump right in as if I’ve known you for 20 years."
His extroverted personality and ability to connect with people foster a strong sense of camaraderie on the build site.
Perhaps the most emotional part of Kevin’s journey with Habitat stems from the passing of his daughter, Hannah Grace. This tragic event played a significant role in his decision to dedicate his life to helping others through Habitat for Humanity. By building homes for families, Kevin continues to honor her memory, bringing hope to others while healing through service.

His unwavering commitment to Habitat for Humanity, even in the face of weather-related delays and personal challenges, exemplifies the kind of resilience and heart needed to make lasting change.
