Recently, President Biden announced new actions to lower housing costs across the United States, emphasizing the importance of utilizing public land for building more affordable housing. This initiative brings attention to a crucial issue for organizations like Pickens County Habitat for Humanity: the need to acquire land for affordable housing projects.
For PCHFH, acquiring land is the first and most essential step in creating homes that can transform the lives of families within our community. Since its founding in 1981, PCHFH has built or renovated over 100 homes, providing safe and affordable housing to more than 300 individuals in Pickens County. However, as land costs rise and availability decreases, securing land becomes a significant challenge, one that could limit our ability to meet the growing demand for affordable homes.
A strategic solution to this challenge is the establishment of a land bank. A land bank allows organizations like PCHFH to acquire, manage, and repurpose vacant or underutilized properties. By creating a land bank, PCHFH could ensure a steady supply of land dedicated to future housing projects, thus securing the ability to continue building affordable homes for years to come. This proactive approach not only helps in reducing housing costs but also supports long-term community revitalization efforts.
The President’s call to repurpose public land for affordable housing highlights the importance of collaboration between government and nonprofit organizations.
